Q&A With Thomas Locke: Who Are Your Favorite Fantasy Authors?

Q_A_Thomas_LockeWelcome to Tlocke.com! I’m so excited about the development of the Thomas Locke brand, which I’ll use to promote my epic fantasy and techno-thriller stories.

For over a year now, a tremendous amount of behind-the-scenes planning has been coordinated by my publisher, Revell. They’re partnering with public relations firm Edify Media, and with Blogging Bistro, who has managed my online presence for years (Blogging Bistro developed this website).

I know you have questions about why I’m using the pseudonym, Thomas Locke (my real name is Davis Bunn), and why I’m writing fantasy and techno-thrillers for the general market, when I’ve published primarily inspirational fiction for many years.

Through a series of Q&A blog posts, I’ll answer those questions and more. If you have a burning question about the new Thomas Locke brand, please ask it in the Comments, and I’ll respond in an upcoming blog post.

Do you read a lot of fantasy? Who are some of your favorite fantasy authors/books?

Throughout my childhood, my first passion as a reader was science fiction and fantasy. These stories have remained of vital interest ever since. In the early days of trying to learn writing as a new career path, my first mentor was Arthur C Clarke.

Let’s Talk!

Do you enjoy sci-fi and/or fantasy? Who are your favorite authors? Your favorite books?

I can’t wait to read Emissary! I stumbled across it on Amazon quite by accident and am so thrilled that you have decided to start publishing spec-fic again. It has been way too long. It’s great to see you doing it again and I have really high hopes. I absolutely adored your old novel The Dream Voyagers. It’s still one of my favorites.

Is there any chance that Dream Voyagers might be republished? It really needs a sequel.

When you say that you are writing these books for the general market does that mean that they are not Christian fiction?

And as for your question at the end of the post. Yes, I absolutely love sci-fi / fantasy novels. But I’m having a very hard time coming up with a short list of favorites.

      Ember,

Thanks for your comments about Dream Voyagers. I have no idea whether it will be re-published — that’s a publisher decision.

Yes, the Legends of the Realm series and the Fault Line series are not Christian fiction; they are mainstream fiction.

A couple of my favorite authors are Kathy Tyers (Firebird series) and Chris Walley (Lamb among the Stars). Of course, top of the list is C. S. Lewis’s 3 science fiction books!

Congratulations, Davis!! I’m so excited for you!

I’ve been interested in fantasy since I was a kid – there are SO MANY great books for children and teens that bring the imagination to life! Some of my favorites then were The Fog and The Witch of Blackbird Pond. As an adult, my favorite author is Jim Butcher, author of the Dresden Files series. And my favorite comic book/graphic novel writer is Mark Waid, author of Kingdom Come. Those two were my biggest inspirations for me to write a superhero urban fantasy series. And I got to tell them that in person this year at the WonderCon and Comic-Con conventions! Total fangirl moment!!! 🙂

I can’t wait to read Emissary, Davis! I bet it’s awesome!

I grew up with Tolkein, C.S.Lewis, Stephen Donaldson, as well as being a huge Star Wars and Star Trek fan. I once had a long running relationship with the science fiction book club. Yes. I enjoy that type of writing. Of course, as a Christian now, I want it to be morally on par with scripture. I’ve greatly enjoyed your inspirational writing. I’m sure I will enjoy this as well. Looking forward to it!

    I’m with Ember…Star Voyagers needs a sequel! 🙂

As for an author–How about brand new author Jill Williamson…her Blood of Kings Trilogy is a must-read.

Tolkien baffled me 40 years ago as a high schooler so I stuck to inspirational fiction. But when I came onto your books, I was absorbed both with the intrigue and richness in your writing. Now, almost halfway through Emissary, I am captivated. Every word paints another stroke; the hero remains pure while taunted by evil; supporting characters are bold and noble or threatening and unimaginably frightening. I am thrilled to read your Q&A about your reasons for entering the sci-fi market! As a grandmother of 6 and school volunteer, I will champion your efforts to restore gallantry and integrity, and Mr Davis, you are doing it very, VERY well. I look forward to study guides for the young and for the old alike. Blessings!

What a lovely comment, Linda! Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts, and especially, thank you for your willingness to champion what I hope will be a resurgence of “wholesome” epic fantasy stories that people of all ages can enjoy.

I have to admit, fantasy and science fiction are almost neck and neck in my reading stable. As far as fantasy is concerned, I have to admit to being “old school. . .” and when I stop to think about it, the only author I can name is Piers Anthony. And yet what is so unique, is that I actually see him as three different authors. He never used a pen name, but he has 3 series that are completely unique and different from one another; The Xanth Chronicles, The Blue Adept Series, and Incarnations of Immortality. I guess you could say that I draw rather fine – yet distinct – lines between fantasy (Piers Anthony) and epic adventure; in which I include J.R.R. Tolkein, C.S. Lewis, and the most recent addition to this select group . . . Thomas Locke! Sorry, I couldn’t resist!

      Steve,

I agree with what you said about fantasy and scifi being neck-and-neck. I feel privileged to be part of your select group!
